brisbane city council library catalogue – The City

The City of San Jose, the City Council, and the Public: A Demonstrated Power Differential
The City of San Jose, the City Council, and the Public: A Demonstrated Power Differential
Local government and politics suffers from many of the same ills as its state and federal counterparts, which includes problems of, but certainly is not limited to, elitism, pandering, special interests, and poor representation. Nowhere could this have been on greater display than during the meetings of the San Jose City Council on March 6, 2012 and March 13, 2012. Democracy, in any form, is a precarious balancing act between the needs and requirements of the community and addressing the more varied interests of the public, which further requires the certification of the public’s cooperation and subordination. The San Jose City Council has, quite effortlessly, proven an illustrative case study of demonstrated power differential. Without a representative government interested in its quality of democracy and an educated, involved public, City Charters and Constitutions will be treated as mere formalities of procedure to be overcome in the pursuit of the goals of various monied and powerful interests.
